This Southern Brown Bandicoot was found in an area that had a fuel reduction burn on the coast of Portland Victoria. There were very few sign of them in this area prior to the fuel reduction burn. We can see that they are digging at the new shoots because this is their favourite food. Fuel reduction burns promote vigorous growth of native plants. Bandicoots like the tubulars under the ground. You can see this by looking at the photos and checking out what the bandicoots were digging up.

can you explain more on Fuel reduction burn. I am interested to know.
ReplyDeleteFuel reduction burning is where you put a burn through an area to reduce bio mass. This is the grey matter that is left from the trees, shrubs and grasses. Eg bark, leaves and branches.
ReplyDeleteWe don't have the rainfall for bugs to eat all the dead matter. You do fuel reduction burning in Autumn late in the afternoon with very little wind, and keep your eye on the weather. If you do this then it won't be a wildfire and it will creep along and be easy to control. You have to urn back against the wind using a road or a track or firebreak.
I will post more photos of the fuel reduction burn that I did on my property in Donald, Victoria soon.
